Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®
Official, step-by-step card-based setup guide to install Trezor Suite, initialize your hardware wallet, and secure your recovery seed.
Open the Official Page
Type trezor.io/start into your browser. Confirm the padlock (🔒) and domain to avoid phishing sites. This is the only verified setup entry point.
Choose Your Model
Select Trezor Model T or Trezor One on the page — the flow tailors firmware and instructions to your device.
Download Trezor Suite
Click the Download for desktop button and pick Windows, macOS, or Linux. Only download from suite.trezor.io or directly via trezor.io/start.
Install & Launch Suite
Run the installer and open Trezor Suite. The app will detect a connected device and present the guided setup wizard.
Connect Your Device
Use the supplied USB cable. Plug Trezor directly into your computer — avoid hubs during the initial setup to prevent connection issues.
Install Firmware
Follow prompts in Suite to install the latest firmware. Firmware ensures the device runs verified code — do not unplug during the update.
Create or Recover Wallet
Create a new wallet to generate your recovery seed, or choose to recover an existing wallet using your saved seed. Seeds should never be stored digitally.
Set PIN & Passphrase
Set a device PIN for local access. Optionally enable a passphrase for hidden wallets — forgetting it means permanent loss of access to that hidden wallet.
Confirm Every Action
All transactions and account changes must be physically confirmed on the Trezor screen — never accept approvals solely on your computer.
Backup & Maintain
Store your recovery seed offline (consider a metal backup). Keep Suite and firmware updated and avoid using public or shared computers for critical operations.
Detailed Setup & Best Practices
This section expands the card steps with practical advice and examples so you fully understand each stage of your Trezor setup.
Avoid Phishing and Fake Downloads
Phishing attackers create convincing pages that mimic trezor.io. Always manually enter trezor.io/start
or use an official bookmark. Never download Suite from third-party sites.
Recovery Seed — Your Master Key
When creating a new wallet, Trezor displays a recovery phrase (12, 18 or 24 words). Write it down on the provided card. Do not store the phrase digitally and do not share it with anyone. For long-term safety, use a metal backup that resists fire/water damage.
Advanced: Passphrases & Hidden Wallets
A passphrase adds strong security but acts like a second seed: if you forget it, the hidden wallet is lost forever. Use a memorable but strong method (e.g., a combination of a secure phrase and known personal variant) and store hints offline if necessary.
Regular Maintenance
- Check for Suite updates monthly and install firmware updates as released.
- Periodically verify backups and ensure the recovery card remains accessible to you (and any co-trustees if applicable).
- Use unique, strong passwords for any accounts tied to your crypto operations.
If You Lose Your Device
Your funds are recoverable with your seed phrase on a new Trezor device or compatible wallet. If you lost both device and seed, there is no recovery — always keep a secure backup.
